Between 1979 and 1983, the city of Adelaide in South Australia was the stage for a horrific string of crimes against young men and teenagers. They spent the next three years in court. On June 5, 1983, he was abducted a short distance from his house after saying goodbye to a friend at a bus stop. Lindsay declined. The prosecution was led again by Brian Martin QC, who was assisted this time by Tom Birchall, and their case against von Einem relied on evidence of the Kelvin murder, with the details of the crime being so strikingly similar to the murders of Barnes and Langley. Neither of Lewiss researchers, victims rights advocate Wendy Utting and Lewiss old school friend Barry Standfield, have strong recollections of Woodland or what he said. A 2010 study in Queensland showed 23 per cent of LGBTI people had been victims of assault in their lifetime three times the state average. Before he reaches the Merc, however, he glides past a Valiant with fat tyres, mag wheels and doors painted a different colour to the body. Finally, there was Richard Kelvin (15, last picture), the son of a famous local news presenter. Kenton Penley, spokesman for the Lesbian and Gay Community Action, said gay bashings were on the rise and that according to information gathered by the community, at least two homosexuals were hospitalised each week after serious attacks. The pre-trial hearing began on 19 December 1990, in the Supreme Court of South Australia, with Justice Duggan as the presiding judge. However, police raids on various locations around Adelaide linked to von Einem and his associates yielded few clues. Autopsies are conducted by a coroner, medical examiner or forensic pathologist in the state of Texas. It belonged to Neil Muir (25, first picture), a transient and drug addict that had been seen alive the night before. This came across as a strange thing for an innocent person to say. Finally, to answer evidence about how fibres from von Einem's cardigan got onto Kelvin, von Einem stated that he put his arm around Kelvin and hugged him because Kelvin was upset about how his peers had been bullying him at school. He doesnt want to overstate the perils. His body was found a week later, and the details that came out in the autopsy were beyond disturbing. But then a head pops up in the back seat. Teaching the poofters how to swim.. Also entered as evidence were samples taken from Barnes's body which showed that sedative drugs had been present. Von Einem was the leading suspect in the unsolved murders of four other young men between 1979 and 1982, and police continued to pursue leads on those cases in the years after his murder conviction. Medical examiners determine the cause of death, and issue an autopsy report. He denied having any other drugs in his possession, but police also seized a bottle of Noctec, concealed on a ledge behind his wardrobe. Justice Duggan ruled that the evidence relating to the Kelvin murder, and from the various associates of von Einem and hitchhikers, was inadmissible. Faced with such damning scientific evidence, the defence tried to counter this during cross-examination by floating a possible theory that after von Einem's last contact with Kelvin, he had been abducted by other people, who had stored his clothing for five weeks before murdering him and re-dressing him. Kelvin had just seen off a friend at a nearby bus stop on the corner of O'Connell and Marian Streets, North Adelaide and was returning home for dinner. The two males that was with her killed the man. I tried not to go there, but when you were desperate and hungry and tired, I went back there and hoped it would not be me chosen that night for them to have their way. He saw Robinsons white Torana, and noted the Mercedes parked close to a lime-green Valiant. (Queensland and the Northern Territory have taken this mantle in more recent surveys.). Richard Dallas Kelvin (1 December 1967 c. 10 July 1983), was the son of Rob Kelvin, a long-time television news presenter for Adelaide station NWS 9. Someone is hiding there. However, the police then found the bottle of Noctec and von Einem immediately became nervous and told police that he "rarely used those drugs". As recently as 2015, two men were convicted of the vigilante-style murder of Warren Batchelor, 48, in a Perth toilet block, aiming to rid the area of gay men. von Einem stated he thought Kelvin had bisexual tendencies and said that the two of them then had a conversation about problems Kelvin had been having at school, and Kelvin willingly got into the car and they drove to von Einem's home. This has been a story of justice denied, and there is still a long way to go. The victims came flooding through the Speakers door with their stories of abuse. The worst was in June 1984. Earlier surveys had the number at nine out of 10. The agitation continued, so two Scotland Yard detectives were called in for an independent inquiry. Is this some sort of trap? As time has gone on, the desire for reform has got larger and more radical. The Court of Criminal of Appeal rejected the appeal, saying that the trial was conducted fairly and justly throughout; they did concede that Mr. Justice White should have included the evidence relating to the birthday party. And the murders and bashings werent confined to NSW. Like it was something the bosses had done when they were younger. On August 27, 1981, Peter Stogneff (14, second picture) disappeared. I think collectively it put a fair bit of pressure on police, recalls Purcell. In 2009, he killed his next boyfriend, Luke Noonan, 29, in similar circumstances. But the story that became public was this: that Robert Woodland, along with two others, alleged that while underage they performed sexual acts for two MPs (one of whom was still serving in 2002), a judge and a prominent policeman. He denied that they went there to bash gay men. In a little ray of light shining through the darkness, though, recent retesting of exhibits has enabled South Australian police to create a DNA profile of a suspect. It was the era when poofter bashing became a sport. Mr. Justice White then gave his summation of the trial, and in the early afternoon of 5 November 1984, the jury retired to consider their verdict. If you consider that the accused, Mr Lindsay, was so provoked, then you must consider whether the conduct is capable of causing an ordinary person to lose self-control.. About 1.30am, they all left together, going back to Lindsays place where they cracked open another round of pre-mixed bourbon cans. Mick OShea felt his career was ruined by the Duncan drowning. It would become central to an exquisitely Adelaide-style front-page drama, featuring allegations of paedophilia in high places, a string of deaths, claims of a cover-up, a political resignation and, of course, the Parklands that ring of darkness that besieges the city each night. Theres an insecure and rather clumsy anxiety about masculinity among many young men in our society and I think a simple way to achieve some sort of masculine status and some sort of peer-group respect for themselves is to actually carry out gay bashings., The attacks were marked by their frenzied nature and while murder was usually not the intention, there was usually a reckless indifference to the outcome, Tomsen says, noting that the attackers were often surprised when police took the cases seriously.
