Excellent tobacco and one of my current favorites. It is a blend of high-quality tobaccos pressed into a cake and then sliced into "flakes", producing a rich, high-quality smoke, a good nicotine hit, and a tobacco that is not too complex. Fewer relights when fully rubbing out the flakes and letting dry for a few minutes before packing. The cake is made in an interesting way with the two different tobaccos layered to create a stripe of Virginia sandwiched between the dark Kentucky. and less than two thirds of the price of Davidoff's offerings. IMO, DSK is good but not great by contemporary standards, and for me this owes more to its present qualities (or qualities wanting), not to mention the pesky competition, which seems to keep getting better, for all its ever-changing, too. Once the pipe is packed and the bowl lit, the first flavors that I get from the tobacco is a combination of a smokiness and nuttiness from the Dark Fired Kentucky, and then a hint of sweetness from the Virginia and the topping. While the flakes are interesting looking, with the center strip of bright VAs bordered by dark tobaccos (presumably KY and Cavendish), I was expecting something . Rubbing out and giving a brief dry time is all that was needed. The Kentucky is the other prominent flavor, and its earthy spice is fairly consistently noticeable. I suspect that the dark "Kentucky-stripes" in the flake are actually Black Cavendish, because this blend blend is cased and Kentucky is hard to detect. That's just me. Rating for those interested in numbers * stars. The dark burley strips on either edge of a virginia core. If you like old dark fired but it was too strong in flavor or nicotine then dark strong Kentucky might be your blend, but for me the flavor was a little too muted for a blend built around dark fired tobacco. If you find you like the flavors but wish it had a more vinegar base, I highly recommend St. Bruno as your next step. A virginia/kentucky aromatic blend. He is so well known in the area that he is called "the mayor of Neumarkt" by its inhabitants under whom a lot of artists, intellectuals and alternative people. I'm sure that's where the scent of that was, but I couldn't discern it. The taste is something to remember: deep, nutty and smoky. The room note was wonderful, to my nose--the kind of smell that drew me to pipe smoking in the first place. The taste of this blend so uneventful that I find myself wondering when it's going to be finished by the time I'm a third of the way through a bowl. On the contrary this kentucky based flake shows a nice personality supported by a fine display of high quality leaf. It was a little hard to separate the flakes from each other without breaking but this was not a problem. OK, so I was very leery. Otherwise it would probably be a 3 star blend at the least for sure. The aroma is fantastichaving some of this waft up to my nose was pure delight. The presentation of this tobacco is very appealing with several stacks of flakes. The tin aroma is very inviting (strong tobacco smell with hints of fig and raisn), and the tobacco is packaged in conveniently sized flakes. In the tin, the smell is raisin/fig with something else I cannot identify. The flavor profile reminds me a lot of Mac Baren Stockton Roll Cake which isn't available here in the US anymore. Heinrich's smokes a bit hotter with the licorice taste getting bitter toward the last third of the bowl and tastes a little artificial. Beautiful presentation in the tin. Just pops right in perfectly for anything around a group 3-4. I've waited to write a review. On a positive note the presentation of the flakes is excellent, and you'll find three neatly layered stacks of beautiful dark brown flakes with a golden stripe in the middle. It is reasonably priced and I can see this being a real bell ringer for many pipers wanting a full, non English blend, with some sweetness but no annoying nic hit.
